Alaska Legislature Passes SB 40 Recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month

JUNEAU, AK — Today, the Alaska State Legislature passed Senate Bill 40, by Senator Elvi Gray-Jackson (D-Anchorage), formally recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month, observed annually from September 15 to October 15. The legislation celebrates the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the state.

“Senate Bill 40 is more than a recognition; it is a message,” said Sen. Gray-Jackson. “It tells our Hispanic community that you are welcome here in Alaska, alongside all of us. During a time when tensions are high and uncertainty is real, this bill stands as a powerful reminder of the proud and diverse cultures that shape our beautiful Alaskan communities. By aligning with the national observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, Alaska stands with pride in honoring all our neighbors.”

As one of the most diverse states in the country, Alaska's strength lies in the many cultures, traditions, and perspectives that shape our communities. Hispanic and Latino heritage in Alaska stretches back generations, with people who helped build the state and establish roots across all communities. Over time, that presence has grown with thriving businesses, active civic participation, and cultural celebrations that continue to enrich everyday Alaskan life. Today, Hispanic and Latino Alaskans are an integral part of the state's story, contributing to its past, present, and future in ways that deserve lasting recognition.

Senator Gray-Jackson added, “I look forward to seeing this bill signed into law, marking an important step in recognizing the diverse communities that continue to shape and strengthen Alaska.”

Senate Bill 40 now advances to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
