Local Housing Planning Bill Becomes Law Without Governor’s Signature

Anchorage, AK — Last week, Senate Bill 50, sponsored by Senator Forrest Dunbar, D-Anchorage, which strengthens local housing planning across Alaska, officially became law without the Governor’s signature.

Senate Bill 50 will encourage first- and second-class boroughs to include housing development as a specific focus in their comprehensive plans. While many communities already undertake planning efforts, housing has often been treated as a general land-use issue. With this update, housing will now receive dedicated attention in the long-term planning process.

“This is a small but meaningful step forward in addressing one of Alaska’s biggest challenges,” said Senator Dunbar. “Every Alaskan deserves access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. SB 50 provides communities with the path needed to meet their housing needs through active and thoughtful public planning.”

Alaska’s housing shortage impacts everything from attracting young families to the state to providing affordable homes for those already here. By encouraging boroughs to assess and plan for local housing needs, SB 50 helps ensure that progress toward housing planning begins at the local level.

SB 50 received broad bipartisan support in the legislature and was supported by local leaders because of the urgency of Alaska’s housing crisis.

“This law is one part of a larger conversation about how we fix Alaska’s housing system,” said Senator Dunbar. “It’s about local leadership, state partnership, and ultimately about building communities where people can afford to live, work, and raise a family.”
