Task Force on Education Schedules First Meeting

Anchorage, AK – The newly formed Task Force on Education Funding will hold an organizational meeting on August 25 in Anchorage. As part of the meeting, the Task Force will receive an in-depth briefing from the Division of Legislative Finance with the latest education funding numbers and data, including historical comparisons.

“The goal of this task force is to reach a broad agreement on the best way to sustainably and adequately fund public education in Alaska. I am convinced the six members of the Task Force on Education Funding are committed and ready to do the work necessary to reach that goal. Please join us on August 25 as we begin the journey towards building a system that sets our children and our state up for success,” said Task Force Co-Chair Rep. Rebecca Himschoot, NA-Sitka.

The first meeting of the Task Force on Education Funding will be open to the public and streamed live on AKL.tv.

  • Date: August 25
  • Time: 1:00 pm.
  • Location: Anchorage LIO, 1500 West Benson Boulevard.

The tentative schedule for future meetings of the Task Force on Education Funding includes a meeting on October 30 to receive updates and recommendations from the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, as well as entities representing local governments, school boards, and school administrators. On November 17, the Task Force will begin evaluating Alaska’s Foundation Formula with input from the Institute of Social and Economic Research and two of the foremost national experts in the field of education funding formulas.

"Every Alaskan wants our children to succeed in life. There is no question that a well-rounded education taught by high-quality teachers prepares our future electricians, doctors, lawyers, and small business owners of Alaska. This task force will identify the most efficient and impactful ways to improve Alaska’s public education system by identifying, discussing, and recommending evidence-based policy reforms and meaningful changes to how we fund our public schools to the 35th Legislature,” said Task Force Co-Chair Sen. Löki Gale Tobin, D-Anchorage.

The authorizing legislation for the new Task Force on Education Funding requires the members to submit a report of findings and recommendations to the 35th Alaska State Legislature in January 2027.
