Senate President Gary Stevens Issues Statement on Governor Dunleavy’s Proposed FY2027 Budget
Senate Will Work to Deliver a Responsible, Balanced Budget for Alaskans
Anchorage, AK – Governor Mike Dunleavy today released his proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget. As required by Alaska’s constitution, the budget is submitted by December 15, ahead of the legislative session, which convenes on January 20, 2026. Senate President Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak, issued the following statement:
“As we begin this year’s budget process, Alaska continues to face tighter revenues and increasing demands, even more so than last year. The governor’s proposal provides a foundation to work from, and the Legislature has substantial work ahead.
“Despite these challenges, the Senate Majority’s Finance Committee—led by co-chairs and members with decades of budget experience—knows how to navigate difficult fiscal years, set priorities, and produce a responsible budget that meets the essential needs of Alaskans.
“The Senate will carefully review the budget to focus on core services, support public education, and strengthen our economy while ensuring we live within our financial means. The Senate Majority’s goal is to produce a balanced budget that benefits Alaskans today and keeps opportunities for future generations.
“We also understand that the Governor plans to introduce a broader fiscal plan in the coming weeks, including potential revenue measures. Since his budget proposal depends on drawing down about half of our remaining savings, it is crucial that any long-term plan clearly outlines how Alaska will stabilize its revenues and prevent depletion of our limited reserves.
“When the legislative session begins in January, we will evaluate the Governor’s full fiscal package and balance it with the needs of Alaskans. A sustainable path forward will require open communication and collaboration between both the administration and the Legislature. Any solution to our fiscal crisis must be practical and in the best interest of Alaska families, and it will require all of us working together to achieve that.”
