I support long term funding of K-12 schools and increasing the BSA – inside the formula. This week I voted against overriding the Governor’s veto of one-time, outside of the formula, money for education because we already missed the bus for funding this school year. If the override had passed, the one-time money would not have arrived at our school district in time to hire more teachers and improve learning outcomes for our students this year.

Inflation has affected all of us and school districts have been hit hard by cost increases, so if we want to improve the education outcomes, we must increase school funding. Instead of looking back at the budget we passed last year, I’m looking forward. I do not want veto fights every year and will be working with my fellow legislators and Governor Dunleavy for a BSA increase that works for students and is part of a balanced budget.

It’s important that K-12 funding is inside of the BSA formula so that districts will know what funding to expect and can budget accordingly. BSA increases need to be made in consideration of accountability measures so that we can ensure additional funding results in improved outcomes.

Alaska’s fish and game are an important part of putting food on our tables. I’ve introduced bills to help ensure Alaskans are able to get the full benefit of these resources. SB 168 Restitution for Taken Game would directly compensate Alaskans when game is confiscated in error, and SB 171 Residency Req Hunting Trapping Fishing would ensure only Alaskan residents are able to enjoy resident license fees and bag limits.

Incredible artwork from classes at K-Beach Elementary, Soldotna Elementary, and Sterling Elementary are all featured this month in the stairwell of the Alaska Capitol as part of the Art in the Capitol program. It's nice to see art from Kenai Peninsula students when I'm here in Juneau and far from our beautiful home. Check out the photos on my Facebook page!

The Alaska Legislature started the new session this week, and I’m honored to work on behalf of the Kenai Peninsula. My top priorities this session are fiscal stability, good roads, public safety, and high-quality schools. Please call my office at 907-283-7996 or email me at senator.jesse.bjorkman@akleg.gov with any questions or ideas you may have.

A college education is a huge financial investment, and scholarships and financial aid can help make it more affordable. The Community Scholarship Fair on Saturday, January 27 provides a great opportunity for students and parents to meet with local businesses and organizations that provide scholarships and learn how to apply for these funds. Visit the Soldotna Chamber's page to learn more about the event.

Alaska's dependency on food shipped in from the lower 48 is concerning, and it's important that we grow in-state food production. I've sponsored SB 161 to improve the State's program of tax breaks for farmers. And the Alaska Division of Agriculture has two grant programs underway for Alaska farmers with letters of intent due by February 9. Click the links below for more information:
