Hello!

This week the Senate Education Committee forwarded a bill that will secure stable and predictable funding for schools. The bill provides a 4.6% increase in state funding compared to last year. These additional dollars are vital to empowering successful learning outcomes.

We know that money alone isn’t enough to educate students successfully. Schools need to set high expectations and clearly communicate those criteria to families and students. I am urging the legislature to make meaningful changes to education policy that will ensure a high school diploma guarantees academic achievement. A diploma from an Alaskan school should be a certification to the public that a student has achieved standards that enable them to be successful citizens who can build a meaningful future for themselves.

It was great to see so many of you at the town hall meetings last weekend in Cooper Landing and Soldotna. It is clear that people on the Kenai value education, well managed fisheries, good roads, and fair elections. If you couldn't make it, please reach out to share your thoughts and ideas.

When Alaskans are sick or injured, waiting for their insurance provider to provide “prior authorization” or pre-approval for medical treatment, procedures, or medication is an added burden and can delay timely treatment. I introduced SB 133 through my Labor and Commerce Committee to improve the process for authorizing insurance coverage of medical care. SB 133 would establish time frames for approvals, specify communication requirements between parties, and provide for expedient approvals of treatment for people with aggressive illnesses.
