Alaskans who can legally carry concealed handguns at home should have the right to do so when they travel to other states. This week the Senate State Affairs Committee heard House Joint Resolution 3, which I have co-sponsored, and which would encourage Congress to make this legal in federal law.

The Senate State Affairs Committee has drafted SB 138 to help ensure Alaska’s elections are secure and transparent. The bill requires the Division of Elections to conduct audits to ensure results are accurate, provides for increased security and electronic signature verification, and requires counting of received absentee ballots before the election for faster reporting, among other changes.

Kenai Peninsula residents must have the ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights without restrictions from government. House Bill 61 would prohibit state and local government from infringing upon Alaskans’ right to keep and bear arms through an emergency declaration. I cosponsored the companion bill in the Senate and will be a yes vote for your gun rights on the Senate floor before we adjourn.

May 4th was the National Day of Prayer this year, when citizens and elected officials gather to pray for our communities, our state, and our country. I was glad to attend the event here in Juneau. I know the decisions we make can have profound impacts for the residents of the Kenai Peninsula, and I appreciate your prayers as I work on your behalf in the Legislature.
