Memorial Day is a somber recognition of all of the men and women who have given their lives in service to our country. As you spend the weekend with your friends and family enjoying all that the Kenai Peninsula has to offer, I hope you will take a moment to reflect on the freedoms that we enjoy, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect those freedoms.

I am thankful that I had the opportunity to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice by introducing SB 174 and shepherding it through the Alaska Legislature. The bill establishes the Honor and Remember flag in state law, allowing it to be flown at public buildings. While there are monuments to our fallen, few people get to see them. These flags provide more opportunities to honor the men and women who died in service to our country, as well as the families they left behind. My colleagues in the Legislature passed this bill unanimously.
