Capital Projects for the Kenai Peninsula

 

The Fiscal Year 2025 Capital Budget passed by the Legislature last month contained nearly $100 million in capital funds for projects and non-profit needs across the Kenai Peninsula. I'm thankful my colleagues in the Legislature were willing to support these needs on the Kenai. Below are the projects that were in the budget bill that passed. The budget is now under consideration by the Governor. He has the final say in whether funding for these items will go through. Please let me know if you have questions about any of these items.

Bradley Lake - Dixon Diversion: $1,379,700

Increase output of the dam by 50 percent, providing the least expensive power on the Railbelt. 

 

Copper Landing - Emergency Services Buildings: $92,748

Build a covered awning for vehicle storage, install a new water heater and new metal siding, windows and door trim on buildings 2 and 3.

 

Funny River - Community Center: $10,000

Provide much needed outside restroom facilities.

 

Funny River - Community Center: $225,000

Upgrade the Community Center to qualify as an Emergency Center for emergency response personnel and local residents. 

 

Homer – All Ages and Abilities Pedestrian Pathway: $208,800

Construct a 4,950 foot-long pedestrian pathway along area streets with ADA access and other features to improve pedestrian connectivity and safety.

 

Homer – Harbor Expansion: $288,523

Preliminary investigation of expanding the Homer harbor.

 

Homer - Snowmads: $76,000

Install access mats for wetlands areas on Caribou Lake Trail.

 

Homer - Society of Natural History: $250,000

Replace the roof on the Society's building. 

 

Homer Electric Association: $700,000

Further exploration and analysis of the geothermal potential near Mt. Augustine.

 

Kachemak Bay Drive – MP 0 – 3.5: $300,000

Strengthen and protect the designated Tsunami evacuation route to improve motorized and non-motorized passage.

 

Kalifornsky Beach Road: $2,729,000

Replace culvert at MP 11.7 near Dog Fish Ave to help address area flooding.  

 

Kasilof - Intersection: $1,000,000   

Install flashing light at the intersection of K-Beach Road and the Sterling Hwy to improve public safety.

 

Kenai - Lift Station: $300,000

Supplemental funding for improvements to three lift stations.

 

Kenai - Senior Center: $50,000

Replace existing membrane flat roof system at the entry canopy of the Senior Center.

 

Kenai - Street Lights: $400,000

Update nearly 50-year-old streetlighting to address issues and improve safety and security for citizens.

 

Kenai - Water and Sewer Utility: $145,000

Replace two aging 20+ year-old vehicles that are necessary for the Utility's operations.

 

Kenai Bridge Access Road: $2,173,000

Construct a pedestrian pathway between Beaver Loop Road and Kenai Spur Highway to improve public safety. 

 

Kenai Peninsula - Food Bank: $10,000

Purchase a new double door refrigerator for the Food Bank's soup kitchen, the Fireweed Diner.

 

KPB - Bear Creek Fire Station: $450,000

Provide asphalt surfacing for the Fire Station's parking area. 

 

KPB – Substandard Roads: $700,000

Implement improvements to substandard roads to bring them up to road service area standard specifications.  

 

KPB - Solid Waste Department: $500,000

Purchase a tire shredder.

 

Moose Pass - Volunteer Fire Company: $128,500

Purchase new air respirator equipment for fire fighters to protect them from smoke and air-borne chemicals during responses.

 

Ninilchik - Senior Citizens Center: $136,000

Remodel and expand kitchen.

 

Nikiski - Senior Shores Senior Housing: $65,000

Install a septic system and well for the planned expansion of Senior Shores senior housing.

 

Seldovia – Safe Roads Project: $88,000

Purchase additional materials to repair and resurface unpaved rights-of-ways.

 

Seward - Alaska Sealife Center: $700,000

Replace failed roof on the Center. 

 

Seward Bear Creek Service Area: $655,000

Implement flood mitigation in the area. 

 

Seward Highway - MP 14 RR XING: $18,330,400

Reconstruct the railroad crossing at MP 14 of the highway. 

 

Soldotna - Regional Sports Complex: $690,000

Design plans to expand and renovate the conference room to better accommodate regional functions.

 

Soldotna- Redoubt Ave & Smith Way: $363,800

Improve the abutting sections of Redoubt Ave and Smith Way, including ADA and drainage improvements. 

 

Soldotna – Street Maintenance: $300,000

Construct a structure to protect the supply of sand used to treat winter roadways and make it more accessible to road crews following heavy snowfalls or freezing temperatures. 

 

Sterling - Community Center: $50,000

Purchase furnishings and equipment for the Center.

 

Sterling Highway - MP 82.5 - 94 Safety Corridor: $64,913,000

Design and reconstruction of highway to implement safety improvements. 

 

Sterling - Senior Center & Moose River Manor: $130,000

Replace the septic system at the Sterling Senior Center.

 

Sterling Highway and Seward Highway Intersection: $373,600

Implement further improvements to the intersection.
