Thank you for voting!

Anchorage Mayoral Runoff Election

Watch this week's video update

They're sending out the vote-by-mail ballots for the Anchorage Mayoral runoff today, April 30th.If you voted by mail in the Anchorage Municipal General Election, you should receive your runoff ballot to the same address. Ballots are due by Tuesday, May 14th.

If you will be travelling during the election, you can apply to have your ballot mailed to a temporary address. Or you can vote by email. All three Anchorage vote centers will also be open for in-person voting starting May 7th: City Hall, Loussac Library, and Eagle River Town Center.

Brain Injury Awareness Month

Last week, the governor signed Senate Bill 46 to designate March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. Between 3.2 and 5 million Americans live with traumatic brain injuries, and Alaska has one of the highest rates of traumatic brain injuries in the nation. Raising awareness about traumatic brain injuries can help encourage preventative measures, such as wearing a seatbelt while driving and wearing a helmet while biking.

I'm proud to support this measure to increase awareness for Alaskans living with traumatic brain injuries.

Alaska Fishermen's Fund

Last week, the governor signed Senate Bill 93 into law. This bill increases the maximum allowable payout from the Alaska Fishermen's Fund from $10,000 to $15,000. The fund, which is currently valued at around $14 million, dates from before statehood provides medical reimbursements to fishermen, who are not covered under the Alaska Worker's Compensation Act. The fund acts as a last resort for fishermen who are injured on the job to pay their medical bills.

The fund is administered by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development and is self-funded through licensing permits and fees. To ensure financial stability of the fund, the bill contains a provision that if the value of the fund falls below $7.5 million, the maximum payout will return to $10,000.

Commercial fishing is an important part of Alaska's economy. I am proud to support this bill and the members of Alaska's fishing industry.

The Way Forward

Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on The Way Forward: Report of the Alyce Spotted Bear & Walter Soboleff Commission on Native Children. To watch the recording of our committee meeting, please watch the archive on Gavel Alaska. To read that report and learn more about the work of the Commission, please see last week's newsletter.

During the presentation, the committee viewed the film "Our Future Ancestors: A Story of Education in Alaska," by Cook Inlet Tribal Council. In working on the challenges and opportunities for Native children, it is critical to address the history of education in tribes and villages. You can view that film below:
