Alaska Judicial Council Appointment

This week, the Anchorage Daily News Published my opinion piece "Babcock shouldn't be confirmed to Alaska Judicial Council."

The Alaska Constitution established the Alaska Judicial Council to serve an essential role in building and maintaining fair and impartial courts throughout Alaska. Our Alaska Constitution commands that appointments to the Council by the governor and the bar association “shall be made with due consideration to area representation and without regard to political affiliation.” Sadly, the governor has taken the unprecedented step of nominating a third public member from Southcentral Alaska and failed to appoint a public member “with due consideration to area representation.”

If confirmed, Kristie Babcock from the Kenai would join Dave Parker from the Mat-Su and Lynne Gallant from Anchorage as the third public member of the Council from Southcentral. Now, the Legislature must decide whether to follow our constitution and decline to confirm the governor’s unfortunate nomination.

Anchorage Mayoral Runoff

Have you returned your ballot yet? There are numerous ways to vote for Mayor by the May 11, 2021 deadline.

Vote By Mail

Voted ballots being returned by USPS mail must be postmarked no later than May 11, 2021, and received by noon May 21, 2021. If mailing the day before, or on Election Day, ask a postal official to hand-cancel/hand-stamp the envelope with a postmark.

Secure drop boxes are now open for voters to return their ballot at any time before 8:00 PM on Election Night. Below are a few drop boxes near House District 21 and around Anchorage:

2021 Free Anchorage Summer Disposal Pass

Registration is now open for Free Summer Disposal Passes! Any resident of the Municipality of Anchorage ages 18 and older can register online for free disposal of one load of garbage at the Anchorage Regional Landfill ONLY. Passes can be used from May 1 through Sept. 30. Pass registration closes May 31, so sign-up today!
