Traffic Calming in Spenard
Each year, the Municipality's Traffic Department reviews requests for traffic calming throughout Anchorage. Roadways are prioritized based on Community Council recommendations passed by resolutions. The MOA then conducts traffic studies and screens requests to identify which roads may qualify for traffic calming. Selected roads are added to a priority list for future funding. Improvements are primarily funded through the Anchorage Roads and Drainage Service Area bonds, which are subject to the approval by voters each year.
Traffic calming consists of physical design and other measures put in place on existing roads to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for people in cars, on foot, or on bike. Examples include:
- Speed humps or speed tables (longer than humps)
- Raised intersections
- Traffic circles or roundabouts
- Narrowing the roadway
- Full or half closures
- Diagonal diverters
Note: community councils can only recommend roads managed by the Municipality of Anchorage, and not roads managed by the State of Alaska Department of Transportation.
