Dear friends and neighbors,
Thank you to all of you
have already submitted your thoughts on this Dept of Transportation
group of projects. These comments are very helpful for the planning
process. If you haven’t offered your thoughts yet, it's
not too late to add your input!
Main takeaways from results
so far:
Most respondents felt that
the O’Malley–Dimond section of the Seward Highway generally
functions well but identified pedestrian and cyclist
safety—especially between Scooter Avenue and Dimond Mall—as a
serious concern, with many supporting an underpass or
overpass to prevent dangerous crossings. Several comments
emphasized improving lighting, signage, and winter
safety on ramps and merges, particularly at O’Malley and
Abbott, while others noted that traffic congestion occurs
mainly during peak hours. Opinions were divided on the need for
major redesigns: many preferred minimal changes or focusing
funds elsewhere, while some supported modest upgrades
like longer merge lanes, better roundabouts, and clearer
markings. A recurring theme was strong support for bike and
pedestrian connectivity but skepticism about expensive
roadway expansion, with calls to prioritize practical,
safety-oriented, and well-constructed improvements over
large-scale projects.
