Dear Friends,

I hope you've been soaking up the last rays of summer sunshine! It’s hard to believe that the lazy days of summer are winding down. As the leaves begin to hint at their autumnal transformation, we’re reminded that the new school year is quickly approaching.

You’ve probably noticed the bustling back-to-school sales filling the stores—a sure sign that summer vacation is ending. The Anchorage School District is set to kick off the new academic year in just a few weeks, and we know this transition can bring a mix of excitement and anticipation.

To help ease the back-to-school jitters, it’s important to note that this year’s first day will look a little different. The district has implemented new start times and a staggered first-day schedule to ensure a smooth start for all students. Please see below to make sure you are prepared for the first day!

Interim Visits

The legislative interim is a valuable time to connect with our constituents and gain a deeper understanding of the issues impacting our community. This month, I had the privilege of touring the facilities at Access Alaska. Their dedication to providing essential services for Alaskans with disabilities is truly inspiring. It was an opportunity to learn firsthand about the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and to explore potential solutions together.

Tour of Access Alaska

I was also honored to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Q’et’en Qenq’a – Providence House. This remarkable new facility is a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration and partnership. By bringing together supportive housing, recuperative care, and comprehensive services from South Central Foundation, we are creating a truly supportive environment for up to 45 residents. This project represents a significant step forward in addressing the needs of our most vulnerable citizens.

Interim meetings

Beyond touring facilities and attending ribbon cuttings, the legislative interim is a crucial time for engaging with stakeholders and advocating for the needs of our constituents. This month, I had the pleasure of meeting with the dedicated team at Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT). Their work is essential in safeguarding the health and well-being of all Alaskans by addressing the pervasive issue of harmful chemicals.

ACAT is at the forefront of researching and understanding the impacts of toxic substances on our communities, particularly in vulnerable populations. Their commitment to providing legislators with accurate and timely information is invaluable as we work to develop policies that protect public health. I am impressed by their dedication to their mission and look forward to collaborating on initiatives that prioritize the safety and well-being of our state.

The ongoing natural gas shortage in Southcentral Alaska continues to be a top priority. I recently met with John Sims, President of Enstar, to discuss the company’s efforts to address this critical issue. It’s encouraging to see Enstar’s persistence in finding solutions. Their conditional approval to import Liquified Natural Gas is a positive step forward and could provide much-needed relief in the short term.

I understand the concern and uncertainty this situation is causing for many residents. To keep you informed, I am planning a public meeting with Enstar leadership. This will be an opportunity to ask questions, share your concerns, and learn more about the steps being taken to secure our region’s energy future.

Your input is invaluable as we work together to navigate this challenge. Please stay tuned for more information.
