Dear Friends,

Well, I guess winter has arrived. A record-breaking one-day snowfall has blanketed our city. To help you navigate the winter weather, the municipality has updated its snow-plowing road maintenance website. This website provides real-time updates on road conditions, plowing progress, and any potential closures.

Please remember to:

  • Check the website: Stay informed about the latest road conditions.
  • Drive cautiously: Slow down, increase following distance, and use headlights.
  • Prepare for winter weather: Have a winter emergency kit in your car, including blankets, water, snacks, and a phone charger.

Let's all work together to stay safe and enjoy this winter wonderland!

Cook Inlet Natural Gas Shortage

The recent news about natural gas shortages may be causing concern. Please know that my office is actively working with local utility providers, Enstar Natural Gas and Chugach Electric, to maintain reliable utility services for all Anchorage residents.

Enstar Natural Gas is taking proactive steps to address the shortage, including exploring the importation of liquid natural gas as an interim solution. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available.

Chugach Electric is working on a long term plan to diversify their energy production to reduce the increased cost of natural gas. The photo below demonstrates that Chugach is doing their best to ensure power is affordable across Alaska.

ASD Legislative Report

ASD Superintendent Dr. Jharrett Bryantt addressed legislators on October 16th imploring the state to increase the BSA (base student allocation). The event was hosted at Service High School and the students proudly escorted visitors through the school to the library. The culinary students served the delicious meal they made and the Service Jazz Band provided lively entertainment.

The event highlighted the dedication of our educators and administrators who have managed to help these kids be successful despite massive funding gaps. Dr. Bryantt began with the positives across the district, siting the smooth rollout of new start times, the major improvements in transportation, and successfully transitioning 6th grade to our middle schools.

However, when trying to make lemonade out of lemon scraps there were still many struggles facing students and educators. The deficit in funding will require ASD to make some difficult decisions, including closing some neighborhood schools and cutting programs.

Dr. Bryantt emphasized that underfunding schools not only hurts our children, but also our economy and the very wellbeing of our state. Poor education opportunities are often sited by the members of our workforce who are leaving Alaska in record numbers. Poorly funded schools will also lead to students who aren't prepared to enter the workforce. We need to do better for the children and families of Alaska and I remain committed to properly funding schools across the state.

Make sure your vote is counted!

Early voting polls have been open for over a week and we are seeing record turnout! I am so glad to see Alaskans taking time out of their busy days to exercise our most valuable right.

This election has a lot riding on it without getting into National politics. Half of our state senators are up for reelection as well as all of the state representatives. There are also two ballot measures. Ballot Measure 1 seeks to increase the state minimum wage from $11.37 to $15 by 2027.

Ballot Measure 2 seeks to eliminate open primaries and ranked choice voting.

If you are still weighing your options, the Alaska Beacon has a wonderful resource here. The Beacon's 2024 voter guide has detailed information on each candidate as well as the ballot measures.

If you need help finding out where and when you can cast your vote early, the Division of Elections can help you here.

If you would like information on where your assigned polling location is Division of Elections can help you here.

The interim is winding down, but that means my office and I are picking up the pace. As we prepare for the 34th Legislature, I am connecting with stakeholders to ensure I bring successful legislation this year.

As always, it is my honor to work for you!
