Dear Neighbors,

I hope this letter finds you well. We are just rounding out a full month of the legislative session and it has been busy and productive. Tomorrow, we celebrate the pioneering spirit of Alaskan equal rights through the advocacy of Representative Elizabeth Peratrovich. The PFD application period is open and there are many ways to help those in need through Pick, Click, Give. I will be in Fairbanks to host a town hall meeting with Representatives Maxine Dibert and Will Stapp on Saturday. Finally, stick around to the end for our first office introduction.

Alaskan Leaders Have Led on Civil Rights – We Must Preserve Them!

Tomorrow, we honor and remember Elizabeth Peratrovich (1911-1958) - civil rights activist, Grand President of the Alaska Native Sisterhood and member of the Tlingit nation for her groundbreaking work and critical role in the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Act. On this day in 1945, following her moving testimony before the Alaska Legislature on the prejudice and discrimination toward Alaska Natives, the Alaska Equal Rights Act was passed into law - the first of its kind in the United States. This groundbreaking policy made discrimination on the basis of race illegal. We can all honor her legacy by striving to achieve true equity and equality for our fellow Alaskans and share the history of Elizabeth Peratrovich's important work! Facebook Event Link

Pick, Click, Give to Support Your Alaska!

Pick.Click.Give. allows Alaskans to donate a portion of their Permanent Fund Dividend to causes they care about statewide. So far this year over one million dollars has already been raised through Pick.ClickGive! Go to pfd.alaska.gov to add a pledge today!

All donations are tax deductible and donors receive tax documentation from the State once their donations have been processed. Permanent Fund Dividend applications are available from January 1 to March 31, though Alaskans may choose to add or adjust their pledges online through August 31.

The program is run by The Alaska Community Foundation in partnership with the Rasmuson Foundation, The Foraker Group, and the State of Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend Division. File for your PFD or add a pledge at pfd.alaska.gov.

If not you, then who? Don't miss out on this last push to give

Meet Our New UAF Intern-Griffen!

Hello! My name is Griffen Cote Sukkaew. I am currently a freshman at the University of Alaska Fairbanks studying Secondary Education. While I am originally from Vermont, I’ve fallen in love with the Fairbanks area. Being half Thai, I appreciate the fact that Fairbanks has so many small businesses which are locally owned by Thai immigrants and their families.

Through the internship, students work with legislators to choose who they work for. Senator Kawasaki was high on my list as well as many other student’s list because of his involvement with his community. Knowing that so many people in Fairbanks have been helped by his actions made me lean towards his office for my internship.

I can say that my image of the Senator hasn’t changed much while working for him. The Senator and his office have worked to include me in the work that they’ve been doing to improve the state. I am incredibly lucky to be in an office that has successfully hosted many interns in the past—many of which are still in the building working for different legislators.

While not at work I love exploring Juneau. From downtown to the various hiking spots throughout the town. I also try to keep up with my friends and family back home and all throughout the East Coast.
