Committees Learning and Moving Legislation
In the committee I chair, the Senate State Affairs Committee, we ‘moved’ two bills out last week. Senator Tobin’s SB 46 and Senator Claman’s SB 28.
SB 46 is a bill to establish the month of March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. It is estimated that 3.2 to 5 million Americans live with long-term disabilities due to brain injuries. Alaska has one of the highest rates of traumatic brain injuries in the nation. The Department of Defense reports that over 430,000 service members have sustained traumatic brain injuries since 2000. By designating March as Brain Injury Awareness Month in Alaska more public awareness will be brought to this issue. With an increased awareness to the dangers of brain injuries, there is a potential for future brain injuries to be prevented.
SB 28 relates to workplace violence protective orders. SB 28 is modeled after the state domestic violence protective order process and would allow an employee to file a petition for a protective order against an individual who the employer reasonably believes committed an act of violence against the employer or employee. The intent of this bill is to help prevent incidents such as the fatal shooting of a hospital employee by an ex-employee at a Soldotna hospital in 2008.
