Dear Neighbors,

Fall is in the air, bringing with it many events to learn, grow from and celebrate. I hope you had a wonderful summer, and that it was as busy and enjoyable as mine. As we head forward to the coming winter, it is important for us to take a moment to remind ourselves of what we need to accomplish to keep our community safe and our spirits high. In this issue, I will discuss traffic safety, the start of the school year, the Alaska Defense Forum and much more!

A Listening Session for Trainor Gate Safety

The Pedestrian Crossing at Tanana Middle School has Been the Site of Several Traffic Accidents

This Wednesday, Representative Stapp and I will be holding a listening session on the safety of Trainor Gate Road, which has been the location of many traffic incidents recently. We invite all local community members to attend to voice your concerns, stories or ideas about road safety. I have brought together FAST (Fairbanks Area Surface Transportation) officials, Department of Transportation engineers and School Staff who will explain our options for solutions to make the road and our community a safer place.

The Listening Session will take place this Wednesday, the 28th, from 6-8 pm at Tanana Middle School. If you cannot make it, you can also attend via Zoom at this link. I am eager to take this time to focus our efforts and recommit ourselves to ensuring the safety of our community members while making Fairbanks a safe place to live, work, raise a family and retire.

Welcome Back Fairbanks Schools!

Senator Kawasaki Enjoying Sweet Treats at Local School Open Houses

School is now in session here in Fairbanks! It is always heartening to see our future leaders head back into classrooms to continue their long journey of enlightenment. I had the pleasure of attending our school's open houses (and eating a lot of ice cream) to talk with our teachers, parents and children about the year ahead. I am committed to giving our students the education they deserve, and though we passed some great legislation this session to help our teachers do the job, there is still a lot more to be done to give Alaska teachers the tools they need to succeed.

On a different note, I would like to once again remind everyone to stay safe in our school zones. We all have a part to play in keeping our community safe. With our kids now out-and-about, I urge you all to pay attention and drive safely, attentively and responsibly. Here are some tips from the Fairbanks Daily News Miner to ensure we all make it home safe:

· Obey reduced speed limits—keep an eye out for signage indicating reduced speed in school zones.

·    Stop for school buses—buses tend to stop frequently. Please keep a safe distance to allow children time and space to board and disembark safely.

·    No texting/phone use—distracted driving is never a smart idea!

·    Watch for crosswalks—always yield to pedestrians when approaching a crosswalk. Children often are not as cautious about crossing the road as adults are.

·    Follow parking rules—these rules designate specific zones for dropping off and picking up students to create a flow in traffic patterns and to prevent accidents.

·    Stay patient—school traffic can be hectic, but patience is necessary in preventing accidents. Plan your morning routine to allow extra time for delays.

·    Set a positive example—children watch and learn from our behavior, so set an example they can follow!

The Alaska Defense Forum Marches into Fairbanks

Senator Kawasaki Co-Chairing this Year's Joint Armed Services Committee Meeting

I am happy to welcome the Alaska Defense Forum back to Fairbanks. Running from Monday to Thursday this week, the ADF brings together top military personnel, government and the international defense policy experts to discuss our military communities and the future of defense in our state. Given the Fairbanks military presence and importance, I am always very proud that we get to host the event to bring attention to the issues facing the heroes in our community.

I will be taking part in a panel once again this year! Tuesday at 4:15 pm, several of my fellow legislators and I will discuss military-focused legislation and how the military has been impactful in our communities. As the Senate Co-Chair of the Joint Armed Services Committee, I am very proud to represent our military servicemen and women, their families and DOD civilian contractors.

Picnic in the Park at Ticasuk Brown Elementary

Sen. Kawasaki and Rep. Dibert at a Recent Picnic in the Park

Next Wednesday, September the 4th, I will be hosting a Picnic in the Park in the Ticasuk Brown Elementary School parking lot to close out the summer. This is an opportunity for you to let me know the issues being faced in your neighborhood that will help me learn what to focus my work on moving forward. We could also talk about the threat of school closures that closed the doors of Nordale, Joy Elementary and Eielson Senior High in the last few years. We will have summer snacks for all ages, including hotdogs, hamburgers, cookies and more, so please stop by and let me know how you’re doing!

Labor Day Parade

Scenes from Recent Labor Day Celebrations

Next Monday is Labor Day when we all come together in support of the important working class our country is founded upon. I look forward to marching alongside our union members, educators and all blue-collar workers at the Labor Day Parade next Monday at 11 am. Starting at the Noel Wien Library, we will make our way to Pioneer Park, where there will be a free picnic afterwards. I hope to see you there!

My Staff and I are Here for You
